WorkinCT: South Windsor gym finds creative ways to stay open during pandemic

Higher Ground Core is all about the fitness and fun and they found ways to make it work even during a pandemic

SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. — Fitness and fun! That’s what Higher Ground Core in South Windsor says is all about.

Erica Misenti launched her business in Manchester back in 2016, and then in December 2019, she moved to a new studio in South Windsor. She said everything was going great until the pandemic hit. So, she had to get creative.

"It’s a roller coaster but it’s fun,” said Misenti. “I have come up with concepts I never thought I could, learned a lot of patience, and overcome something we never thought we’d have to deal with.”

But she is dealing with it by adding outdoor classes when weather permits, online classes, and if you’re comfortable inside, you’ll find social distancing, limited class sizes, routine sanitization, and several different types of classes.

“There’s really no excuses here,” said Misenti, “We do all levels, HIIT class–we do a barre class, yoga sculpt class, Zumba, adult dance, and children’s classes as well.”

Long-time member, Carolyn Nielsen says she keeps coming back not only for the variety but the energy as well.

“It’s unreal that she (Erica) can just keep on pushing through and keep finding ways to keep us motivated,” said Nielsen.

Plus, it’s a family affair! Mom, Laurie Misenti, also helps out. She teaches classes as well and says she couldn’t be prouder of her daughter.

“COVID came in March and she just got so creative and inventive, and just kept the energy flowing,” said Laurie.

“Higher Ground Core was always a dream of mine,” said Misenti, “I danced professionally, and I played soccer growing up, so to have a community that incorporated both workouts, is something I always wanted to have.”
