Daytrippers: Essex Steam Train and Riverboat

The team says the trains are not always a common sight for little ones who visit.

ESSEX, Conn. — All aboard as we day trip down to the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat!

It’s a step back in time, it’s almost like a time warp!

"It’s just a great experience to see something so old yet it’s here in your own backyard,” says engineer, Paul Lewis.

Carmen Vaccarelli grew up loving trains and is the park’s operations manager.

“I have been coming here since I was a kid so I mean to live my childhood dream, and do it for a living," he said. "That, I mean for me, can’t get much better than that."

The team at Essex Steam Train and Riverboat said the trains are not always a common sight for little ones who visit.

“Trains have gone almost to the wayside for a lot of kids, and we get to bring an element of education to them but also an experience that nothing can replicate this,” says Vaccarelli.

In addition to trains, they have rail bikes where are guests can pedal along the tracks in groups of two or four.

“This something that I think has really added us onto the map, we are not just a railroad with trains, were not just a Christmas train, we are... it’s all about the adventure and the experience,” says Vaccarelli.

To ride the rail bike, you must be at least 8 years old, and 4 feet tall. A 2-seater will cost you $75 bucks, and a 4-seater for $125. That’ll get you an 8-mile long trip that lasts about 90 minutes.

Train rides cost $29 a ticket for adults and kids.
