Election officials are not expecting a repeat of last year's heavy turnout on Election Day prompted by the presidential election.

"The turnout in 2007 for the municipals was across the board 37 percent," said Av Harris of the Secretary of the State's office. "We're not expecting a big change from that. If we get 40 percent that will be a big day." Turnout was 80.5 percent last year.

Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz said everything was running smoothly.

"We haven't had any major issues with voting machines or ballots anywhere," she said.

Voting is slow in Vernon, Democratic Registrar of Voters Judith Beaudreau said. "If we don't get some people out to vote pretty soon, everybody's going to fall asleep in the polling places," she said.

"We haven't had a lot of calls here, which indicates it's kind of quiet," said West Hartford Republican Registrar of Voters Eleanor M. Brazell.

Few problems have been reported, Harris said. Machines seem to be functioning. The Secretary of the State's office did receive a few calls about people violating the rule that requires any campaigning to be at least 75 feet from a polling place, Harris said.
