HARTFORD — -
Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is investigating the theft of a Blue Cross Blue Shield laptop containing confidential information for nearly 19,000 health-care professionals in Connecticut.
The laptop was stolen Aug. 25, Blumenthal said, though the health-care providers were not notified until Oct. 23. The circumstances of the theft were unclear.
"As appalling as the data loss is, failing to promptly notify providers of the breach is inexcusable and a possible violation of state law," Blumenthal said at a news conference this morning.
The laptop contained names, addresses, tax identification numbers, provider numbers and some Social Security numbers for 18,817 doctors, therapists and other health-care professionals, Blumenthal said.
