A distraught 31-year-old Essex man stole a pickup truck and rammed state police cruisers during a chase through multiple towns Sunday afternoon, police said.

Kevin Bell was captured in Middletown after the truck became stuck in mud. He was taken to the MidState Medical Center for psychological evaluation.

State police are preparing a warrant for his arrest.

The incident started about 1 p.m. in Essex, where Bell was involved in a domestic violence dispute with his father. He fled in a 2000 Toyota Camry before state troopers arrived.

State police found Bell about 4:15 p.m. driving in Meriden, where he was supposed to meet an ex-girlfriend. Police said they tried to pull Bell over, but he sped away.

In Southington, Bell crashed into a tree stump near a business. He stole a Ford pickup truck from the business and continued through Cheshire and into Middletown.

During the pursuit, he intentionally struck three state police cruisers. One trooper received minor injuries, police said.

He pulled off the side of I-91 in Middletown when traffic became heavy and became stuck in mud, state police said. As troopers approached, Bell threatened to kill himself. He was subdued with a Taser and taken into custody, police said.
