NEW BRITAIN -
Fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire that burned up the back of a three-story building at 37 Lyman Street just after midnight today.
The back porches, kitchens and back room of all three floors were damaged extensively by fire, said Deputy Chief Thomas Ronalter.
While still structurally sound, the building sustained so much damage it is no longer livable, he said. The residents have been displaced.
"There's no way anybody can live in the building," he said.
Two firefighters were treated at an area hospital for minor injuries. Eight companies, a total of 32 firefighters, responded to the scene.
Flames were consuming the back porches and were beginning to extend to the inside of the units when they arrived, Ronalter said.
One company of firefighters attacked the main fire on the porches, while another company went inside and doused fire that was moving to the inside. They brought the fire under control in about an hour, Ronalter said.
