BLOOMFIELD - Bloomfield Fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire at a retirement community.

Fire crews responded to the Seabury Retirement Community, located at 200 Seabury Drive, around 9:30 p.m. Police officials said that the fire started in a recreational pool area and caught a neighboring residential building on fire.

Although firefighters got it under control quickly, putting the fire out altogether took quite a while. There is significant damage. State fire officials are assisting with the investigation, but no cause has been determined.

There were no injures, but 46 residents are temporarily displaced - most staying with friends within the complex, but a handful are in nearby hotels. That, by the way, is not because of damage but because power is shut off to their wing.

American Red Cross personnel assisted those displaced by the fire. A team of volunteers with an Emergency Response Vehicle assisted residents and responders with canteen services, while a sheltering team set up an emergency shelter as a safe place for those displaced.

Seabury is a 66-acre retirement community with independent, assisted, and memory support living areas for retirees with dementia and Alzheimer's. The community includes cabins and apartment style-living.
