HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Gov. M. Jodi Rell and legislative leaders
are expected to resume their closed-door budget talks following the
holiday weekend.
Both sides had been meeting for most of the week at the executive residence. But because of a mutually agreed upon media blackout there's no indication whether the talks have been fruitful.
Staff members say House Speaker Christopher Donovan and Senate President Donald Williams spoke by phone with Rell on Thursday about the two-year budget. They have been at odds for months over how to cover a massive deficit, estimated to be as high as $8.8 billion over two years.
It's unclear whether they'll meet on Monday.
Many state employees are taking an unpaid furlough day on Monday as part of a labor concession agreement with the governor.
