NEW LONDON - It took 7 years but now a Mystic man is going to trial for the murder of his wife.

A judge says there is probable cause that Charles Buck killed his wife Leslie Buck in 2002. Much of the state's case centers around Buck's relationship with a bartender he met at a local bar whom they say he showered with expensive gifts, a car and a house.

Police suspect Buck hit his wife with a wire bar, causing her to fall down the stairs in their home.

Defense attorney Hubert Santos contends the evidence is circumstantial: no weapon was ever found, no evidence of a struggle discovered, the state's medical examiner has never determined the manner of death. He says Leslie Buck had been complaining of chest pain since the kidnapping and he will likely call witnesses to testify her death was an accident and not a murder.

Buck's attorneys immediately entered a not guilty plea. He has been in jail since his January arrest, held on 2.5 million dollars bond. Buck will be back in court in August.
