The Florida Everglades comes to Fairfield County. Trumbull's Canoe Brook Lake was home for at least a week to a baby alligator.
Bill Roma was gardening in his backyard, which borders one of the lake's coves, when he says he heard the gator's calls. So Roma answered the calls, following the sound to the water's edge and spotted the little guy in the weeds, about a foot off shore.
Roma called police, and after several failed attempts, cops managed to net the baby alligator and then handed it over to the Department of Environmental Protection. Roma figures the little guy was a pet which was tossed and abandoned.
"Maybe somebody living on the shore threw it in, no way of telling, but it's sad, they really shouldn't be pets," Roma said.
The DEP will be holding an Exotic Animal Amnesty Day on July 25th at Beardsley Zoo. That where's folks can hand over exotic pets, such as alligators, to the DEP for more suitable homes, no questions asked.
Trumbull's baby alligator is now settling into its new home -- Rainbow Reptiles in Massachusetts.
