WEST HARTFORD - Secretary of The State Susan Bysiewicz is urging people to practice good hygiene today while voting today in light of concerns about the H1N1 Virus.

"When you go to a public place just make sure you wash your hands when you're done," Bysiewicz said today at a polling place in West Hartford. She also said that people can use their own pens, if they would like, to fill in the circles on the paper ballots.

Some voters suspect concerns about the Swine Flu might be keeping people away from the polls. At the Elmwood Community Center in West Hartford, two women who had just cast their votes at another polling place said they didn't have to wait in any lines.

"We found very few people at the polls, " said Barbara Portman. " Five minutes and we were in and out. There were very few people, too bad."

Another woman, Eleanor Gielis, said people were worried about getting the Swine Flu but what could they really do about it. Gielis said her sister's great-nephew just died from the virus out in the Mid-West.

"Eighteen, a freshman in college in Ohio and he was just there for a week or two and caught it and was in excellent health. So, you just don't know," Gielis said.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of the State described voter turn-out as steady. Bysiewicz said voter turn-out is typically a lot lower in local elections than Presidential elections.
