The first day of the Breeders' Cup was certainly not great if you were a favorite. But it wasn't too bad if you were a U.S. horse. The feared dominance of the European horses didn't materialize, but the biggest races are yet to come Saturday. In The Times mythical Rider Cup, pitting select European horses against U.S. horses, the U.S. led, 2-1, and got the points without winning a race. You are awarded 1/2 point if the selected horse finishes higher than the opposing horse. The only horse to win in this contest was Midday, the British import that won the Filly and Mare Turf race. It was Europe's only point.
