SOUTHINGTON - Two former State troopers are under arrest, charged with embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from a business partner.

Karol Siedel, 63, and his son Michael Siedel, 39, turned themselves in to Southington Police Thursday morning. Police say the two illegally funneled money from J and M Electrical LLC to K and J Construction, a company the Siedels own.

The Siedels allegedly used money taken from J and M to construct a home in Wolcott, and to purchase a house in Marco Island, Florida. Police say the Marco Island home was bought in the name of Karol Siedel.

Both Siedels were at one point state troopers, however the two are both retired from the department. The Hartford Courant reports Karol Siedel retired in February 1994 after nearly 21 years on the job, then worked as a sheriff and a judicial marshal at the New Britain courthouse. He left that position in March 2005.

The Courant also reports Michael Siedel was a trooper about 10 years, including a stint on former Gov. John G. Rowland's 12-person security detail when he retired in about 2004. Siedel remained on the job long enough to vest his state benefits, then left to work as an electrician with his father.

Both men are charged with two counts of Larceny 1st Degree, as well as one count of Conspiracy to Commit Larceny 1st Degree. The two are being held on $100,000 bond, and are scheduled to be arraigned in Bristol Superior Court Thursday afternoon.
