HARTFORD -
Connecticut has suffered its first death connected to the H1N1 Swine Flu virus.
The victim, a woman in her 60's from Waterbury, suffered from several chronic diseases including diabetes. She was hospitalized for 6 days at St. Mary's Hospital before dying Tuesday. Her name has not yet been released.
"Our hearts go out to this person's family and friends," Public Health Commissioner Dr. Robert Galvin said in a statement. "Though the cases of H1N1 flu in Connecticut have largely been mild, this death underscores the seriousness of influenza and the devastating impact it can have."
38 more cases of H1N1 have been identified in Connecticut today, including 4 cases from the Tyrell Middle School in Wolcott. That school will be closed through the weekend as it undergoes cleaning and disinfecting.
The total number of H1N1 cases in Connecticut now stands at 395.
The Department of Health says three hospitalizations have been connected to the H1N1 virus, including the person who died. The other two patients were discharged and have fully recovered.
