WorkinCT: Simsbury tennis center allows players to hit the courts year-round

The nice thing about Simsmore is that no matter what the weather is doing outside, players can always hit the courts.

SIMSBURY, Conn. — Inside a historic building tucked away off Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury, there’s a place serving up hours of high energy action.

The four tennis courts at Simsmore are filled with players at all hours of the day.  Some are learning and others are out for a weekly doubles match.

“We’ve been doing this for ten years.  We look forward to it every week.  Thursday night.  It’s a great facility, great friends, great tennis,” said Chris Kent, who plays with friends each week.

That camaraderie on the court is an appealing part of the game with players making lasting friendships while honing their cross-court shots.

“Tennis is a great sport because, for one thing, it’s a wonderful workout.  You’re getting a workout and you don’t even realize it because you’re playing the game.  There’s a lot to it.  The better you get, the more you can do strategy and think about what you’re doing,” said Claudia Berns, the General Manager for Simsmore Tennis.

The nice thing about Simsmore is that no matter what the weather is doing outside, players can always hit the courts at Simsmore.

“For those people that really like tennis in New England, you can’t really play outside once it gets cold.  People take the nets down outside, and you can’t play.  So to have this guarantee every week you can just come and play with your friends, socialize after, get exercise, it’s fun to get exercise in the winter,” said Berns.

The space also has a full kitchen, fitness room, pro shop and a gift shop run by one of the employees.  There’s even babysitting available for parents looking to get in an ace or two on the court.
