GRANBY – A man escaped a fire in the dead of night thanks to man’s best friend.

Firefighters were called to 103 Silkey Roadin Grandby at 2:56 a.m, for a report of smoke in the house and an apparent basement fire.  Fire Chief John Horr said the lone occupant reported that he woke up when his dog began barking. When firefighters arrived about 7 minutes later, they found heavy fire pushing through two of the walls exterior walls.

The rural area does not have any fire hydrants. The Lost Acres Fire Department called for mutual aid from neighboring towns. East Granby, Barkhamsted East Vol. FD, East Hartland, and Southwick MA and Granville MA departments all responded with tanker and pumper trucks, and to supply personnel. All told over 40 firefighters battled the blaze, and they were still putting out hotspots four hours after the first call.

The home is a total loss, but no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Granby Fire Marshal.
