NORWALK - A teenager accused of stabbing a woman in a random attack in the parking lot of a Connecticut beauty spa has been ordered to undergo a competency evaluation.

The attorney for Ellis Tibere, 18, of Guilford, sought the evaluation and recommended Tibere be placed on a suicide watch while in custody.

"I am strongly concerned for my client," said defense attorney Wesley Mead.

Ellis Tibere, 18, of Guilford, was charged with criminal attempt at murder, first-degree assault and possession of a deadly weapon in connection with the attack Monday in Westport, police said.

The 33-year-old victim, a Greenwich resident, was sitting in her car prior to an appointment when someone with a knife and wearing a mask opened the door, police said in a statement posted on Facebook.

Tibere told police he waited for more than three hours in the parking lot of the beauty spa before putting on a black mask and attacking the woman, according to an arrest affidavit.

"The victim attempted to kick the suspect in self-defense at which time he inflicted multiple stab wounds to her leg," police said.

The assailant had fled the scene by the time officers arrived, but was arrested a short distance away based on witness descriptions of his vehicle.

"Based on interviews conducted with Tibere, it appears the victim and location were chosen at random," police said.

The woman was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition, police said.

A judge upheld a $1 million bond that he had been held on since his arrest.
