DERBY — Immigration agents say a Connecticut court security officer tried to prevent them from entering a courthouse where they planned to detain a Jamaican man.

The Hartford Courant reports that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents complain a judicial marshal attempted to prevent the detainment of 23-year-old Domar Shearer on Oct. 31.

Agents say they arrived at the courthouse in Derby to detain Domar for overstaying his visa and charges stemming from a domestic dispute when someone announced their presence, giving Shearer a chance to flee.

Domar took refuge in the public defender’s offices while Judge Patrick Carroll called the federal agency and asked that agents be ordered to leave the courthouse. ICE refused to leave, and a daylong standoff ensued.

Shearer is believed to have traveled to New Haven with activists.
