HARTFORD--FOX 61 is supporting our communities with a new campaign called HOPE--Helping Organizations Promote Education.

One of our new initiatives is a partnership with UConn through a scholarship program called the Drive for 5K--a goal of increasing the number of contributors towards athletic scholarship funds from 4,400 to 5,000 (or 5K).

UConn Athletic Director David Benedict joined FOX 61's Lorenzo Hall and our station's general manager, John Hitchcock, to discuss the new campaign.

"For FOX 61 and our HOPE mission, which is the acronym for Helping Organizations Promote Education, UConn really exemplifies that higher education and student athletes," said Hitchcock. "This partnership allows us work with the university and really seed our future."

By "seed our future," Hitchcock is referring to promoting higher education for student athletes so that they go back into the community to help after school, whether that be as nurses, teachers, or even athletes.

When asked, Benedict pointed to UConn seniors Morgan Tuck, Moriah Jefferson and Breanna Stewart of shining beacons that show hard work can lead to big numbers on the scoreboard, as well a degrees; the three graduated last weekend.

"Exceptional examples of what we're trying to accomplish with all of our student athletes," he said of the trio.

Benedict also explained how every little bit helps, and how the larger UConn community is already so generous.

"UConn nation really represents the people who are going to support our program," Benedict said. "Philanthropy is really key to any athletic program's success."
