BRISTOL – Two children were killed in an overnight car crash in Bristol, and several others were injured.

Around 12:35 a.m. police responded to reports of a severe accident on Middle Street, near Pinebrooke Terrace early Sunday morning.

Police initially said a 2014 Nissan Sentra was driving north on Middle Street when it crossed over the double yellow line and hit a Ford Windstar head-on.

A 4-year-old and a 7-year-old who were in the backseat of the Sentra were taken to Bristol Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The driver of the Sentra, the children’s mother, was taken to the hospital by ambulance with serious injuries. The front seat passenger was transported by LifeStar to a Hartford Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver and front seat passenger of the Windstar were both taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

A possible third passenger in the Windstar may have fled the scene on foot, and police have not found him or her.

The family now says police apologized to them for their incorrect initial analysis of the accident scene, and that the Windstar was the car to cross the line. Police have not confirmed this account.

The identities of the victims is not being released until family members are notified.

Detectives from the Bristol Police Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team are conducting an investigation.

Police say they have not yet charged in connection to the crash.
