BRANFORD–A small transformer fire has caused some long delays on Amtrak Thursday evening.

A transformer fire spread to a nearby building, but was put out quickly. It occurred on Meadow Street in Branford, near the Amtrak train track.

Delays started around 6 p.m. and impacted service along the shoreline from Boston to New York for several hours. New trains were sent to take passengers stranded from ones that lost power, resolving the issues.

Some Twitter users said that they had been stuck for well over an hour.

Amtrak wrote in a tweet explaining what was going on: “Power is out from Shore Line to Old Saybrook due to a fire that is now out. Working to repair but no estimate on how long yet.”
