STAMFORD -- The death of a 2-month-old girl in Stamford has been ruled a homicide.

On Tuesday around 3:15 p.m. EMS responded to a the Little Bears Beginnings Daycare on Wardwell Street for reports of a child having breathing problems. Police now say it was evident she had some type of head trauma.

The child, identified as Bella Redondo, was taken to the hospital, where they tried to save her, but she was pronounced dead at 6:20 p.m.

An autopsy showed that Bella died from blunt force trauma to the head, and it has been ruled a homicide. Now, police are investigating it as a criminal matter.

"We narrowed it down to three people in the daycare that could have the means to do this. we're looking at a fall, we're looking at any mechanism of injury that could've caused this kind of trauma to the skull," Lt. Diedrich Hohn, of the Stamford Police Department, said.

According to the city of Stamford's official website and the official state of Connecticut licensing database, the daycare is operated by Nydia Carrillo, who has an active family child care home license. It was issued on April 17, 2015, and shows that she had an unannounced inspection on December 30, 2015.

The State’s Attorney’s Office has been notified and is being updated on the investigation.

"This is the first homicide for the city of Stamford in 2016. It is also a sad day for the family of Bella Redondo and the Stamford Police Department offers our condolences to Bella’s family. This is an ongoing investigation and we hope we could assist in bringing closure to the family," a statement said.

In less than one day $7,000 was raised on a GoFundMe set up to pay for Bella's funeral expenses.
