NEW YORK — Chipotle Mexican Grill has stopped selling pork at about a third of its restaurants.

The Wall Street Journal Reports that a Chipotle said during a routine audit, the company discovered a major supplier did not comply with Chipotle’s animal welfare standards.

Chris Arnold, a spokesperson for Chipotle, said, “In this case, through our routine auditing, we found some inconsistencies with our protocols at one of our pork suppliers and we have suspended that supplier. That has created a shortfall in our pork supply. Our pork is from pigs that are raised with access to the outdoors or in deeply bedded barns, and without the use of antibiotics. Conventionally raised pork falls well short of our standards for animal welfare, and we decided that we would rather stop serving pork in some of our restaurants rather than compromise our standards with regard to animal welfare.”

This affects the restaurant’s “carnitas” options for burritos, burrito bowls and tacos.

The chain, which focuses on organic and local meat and vegetables, has more than 1,700 restaurant locations nationwide, including 14 in Connecticut.
