BRIDGEPORT  — Coast Guard crews spent nearly 24 hours searching for a missing swimmer in Long Island Sound just outside Bridgeport Harbor before suspending the search Monday evening.

Authorities received reports of two men who entered the water from their raft at around 4:30 p.m. Sunday. One man swam on shore, and the Coast Guard was notified around 5:15 p.m. that one man was missing.

A search continued for most of Monday in an effort to find the second person, who is said to have been wearing a white T-shirt and no life jacket. The Coast Guard reports that it searched 78 square miles, but the man wasn’t found.

“After careful consideration, the Coast Guard and our multiple first responders in the Bridgeport area, decided to end our search for the missing person in the water,” said Capt. Edward Cubanski, commander Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound. “Our heartfelt thoughts go out to the friends and family of the missing person during this difficult time.”

Two 45-foot response boats from Coast Guard New Haven and Coast Guard Eaton’s Neck, as well as an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod and members of the Bridgeport, Fairfield and Stratford police departmetns aided in the search.

Their names haven’t been released.
