SIMSBURY - It's been more than five months since mother and MassMutual executive Melissa Millan was found stabbed and killed on the side of the road in Simsbury.

The 54-year-old was out jogging near the Iron Horse Boulevard Bike Trail on November 20 when a driver discovered her and called police. Now, a makeshift memorial set up by her family after the murder still is there.

Police aren't saying if there are suspects, but they did say investigators have followed leads out of state and that the FBI is helping out.

Simsbury Police Chief Peter Ingvertsen says his detectives have worked on the case every day. Wednesday, he said two investigators followed up on a lead outside of Simsbury.

Milan's ex-husband William Hodgin is not considered a suspect. The two divorced in 2012 and share custody of their two kids.

"We have talked to him. But I would not at this time claim he's a person of interest," Chief Ingvertsen said.

Police still won't say whether the murder was random or targeted, but they have stressed that it is safe to use the trail. As always, they say, you should take general day-to-day precautions and report any suspicious activity.

A report by Wall Street on Parade, a financial newspaper, says Milan had access to highly sensitive data on bank profits from the collection of life insurance benefits. So was she targeted because of her role?

"I would say that is something we looked at. We were familiar with it. We looked into it. And we continue to look into it," Chief Ingvertsen said.

Milan was an avid jogger and triathlete.

For now, police say they are keeping extra patrols near Iron Horse Boulevard, a popular trail for bikers. Many say last year's murder hasn't detered them from coming here, but they are keeping a close eye.

Police say they would not call it a cold case because they are looking into several leads.
