Rahami, a native of Afghanistan and naturalized U.S. citizen, was charged on Tuesday with use of weapons of mass destruction; bombing public places; destruction of property by means of fire or explosive; and use of a destructive device during a crime.
The charges are related to the two explosions that went off on Saturday in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan and in Seaside Park, New Jersey. Thirty-one people were hurt in the Chelsea, New York bombing, and no one was injured in the New Jersey explosion.
The charges were filed by Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara.
Rahami was already charged in the state of New Jersey with attempted murder of five law enforcement officers, as well as weapons-related charges. Those charges are related to a shootout that occurred in Linden, New Jersey, when officers tried to arrest him. He was shot several times and is still recovering in the hospital.
He is also suspected of planting a bag filled with bombs at an Elizabeth, New Jersey train station on Sunday night, as well as a second pressure cooker near the Cheslea bombing site that did not go off.
