Farmington River Spill Concerns

WINDSOR — Connecticut environmental officials say fish tested downstream from a toxic firefighting foam leak contain “elevated levels” of hazardous chemicals.

Lee Sawyer is a spokesman for the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Sawyer says test results indicate it was wise for officials to issue an ongoing warning to not eat fish from the Farmington River after the June spill occurred.

In June, an estimated 50,000 gallons of water and firefighting foam stored at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks leaked into the waterway.

The Hartford Courant reports officials are waiting on independent validation of results from fish and water samples before releasing details.

Firefighting foam used to combat the blaze from a plane crash at the airport that killed at least seven people Wednesday prompted officials to issue another warning about the toxins.
