HARTFORD — Former Waterbury Mayor Philip Giordano, who was convicted of sexually assaulting two young girls, is seeking a reduced sentence.

The Connecticut Post reports the 52-year-old Giordano testified for nearly two hours Friday before a U.S. District judge. He is serving a 37-year federal prison term after he was convicted in 2003 of federal charges including violating the civil rights of two girls ages 8 and 10 by sexually abusing them while he was mayor.

Giordano said he turned down a 12-year deal that would have forced him to testify against a reputed organized crime associate.

But he’s now claiming his former lawyer never informed him of a 15-year offer that did not require him to testify. He says he would have accepted that deal.
