COLUMBIA  -- Getting ready for Veterans Day means saddling up at Newbury Farm in Columbia where, each week, vets are welcomed to ride.

"I've been active in therapeutic riding since the '80s," said C.K. Bellone, the owner and lead instructor at Newberry Farm.

Bellone runs a program called "Horses for Heroes," which provides access to horses and riding for veterans and their families.

"It helps them gain control of themselves, physically, socially and emotionally, they gain control of something bigger than themselves," Bellone said.

There are about 18 veterans from all over the area who are now involved in the therapeutic riding program at Newberry Farm.

Carlita Cotton, a retired Air Force veteran has been riding for two months, in part, to help her injured back. Cotton said, "Mentally and physically, I believe if you're suffering from any trauma this will help greatly."

Horses for Heroes is holding a free riding event for all veterans and family member on Veterans Day, November 11, 3 p.m.-5 p.m. Newberry Farm is located at 16 Chowanec Road, Columbia, Connecticut. To learn more click here.
