An explosion that led to a three-alarm fire in Stamford is being blamed on an extension cord outside of the house, according to the Stamford Fire Marshal.  Officials are still investigating whether the cord was intended for outside use.

Firefighters were called to 29 Bittersweet Lane at around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, after someone called 911 reporting an explosion at the house.

Several people were inside the home at the time and were all able to make it out safely. Two dogs perished in the blaze but one survived. The family credits one of their dogs for waking them up and alerting them to the fire.

The house eventually collapsed and is a total loss.

There are limited hydrants in the area and a tanker truck had to bring in water from a nearby pond. Several fire departments responded including Stamford Fire, Long Ridge, Belltown, Glenbrook, Turn of River, Darien, New Canaan and Pound Ridge, NY.
