MERIDEN  — The city of Meriden is proposing to return two school resource officers to its middle schools with savings from a retirement incentive program.

The Record-Journal reports the city has allocated over $60,000 to pay for the two officers. The posts had been eliminated months ago after the police budget was cut.

The new incentive plan aims to reduce the impact of separation payments on the city’s budget by encouraging retiring employees to delay their separation payments and roll them into their pensions.

City Council officials say it’s not yet clear how much savings might be achieved this year because it remains unknown how many employees will take the offer.

The school superintendent has endorsed returning to the officers to the schools.
