MIDDLETOWN -- The city is hosting several events to raise awareness for National Domestic Violence Awareness Month including a kickboxing workout that was held Saturday.

The "Knockout Domestic Violence" event raised funds for New Horizons Domestic Violence Services in Middletown,  which operates a safe house for victims of domestic violence and their children.

“It does give you confidence because you’re surrounded by people who are involved with the same cause that you love, and it helps you a lot and it helps you to help others at the same time," said Yajaira Joaquin-Ortiz.

Domestic violence affects nearly 20 people in America every minute, and accounts for about 15 percent of all violent crime.

Middletown is also hosting a walk Sunday at 2 p.m. in Harbor Park. People of all ages can walk the roughly mile-long course. The fee for participants age 18 and older is $18; for those under 18 it is $10; and for groups or corporate teams with a minimum of five people, the suggested donation is $50.

They will host a game show night Thursday, October 20, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Board Room at 514 Main Street in Middletown. The event starts at 6 p.m. with family-friendly board games. Admission starts at per $5 person.
