BOSTON–General Electric may have found its new home.

WCVB-TV is reporting that GE has narrowed down the city it wants to relocate its headquarters to to Boston and New York.

The company, which is currently headquartered in Fairfield, Connecticut, was expected to make a decision by the end of the year, but delayed it.

When asked about the possibility of GE’s move, Boston Mayor Martin Walsh told the station, “Really can’t, really can’t talk about any particulars here. Boston is a great city, it’s a wonderful city. I think anybody would love our city and what we have to offer.”

Walsh also wouldn’t comment on the possibility that tax credits were being offered to entice the company.

There are 700 employees at the Fairfield location who would have to be relocated to the Seaport District in Boston.

In November, GE CEO Jeff Immelt said the conglomerate will “always have a big presence in Connecticut,” though he confirmed the company is still looking for a new headquarters site.

The talk of the relocation began in response to increased business taxes enacted in the state’s new budget last summer, which were supported by Gov. Dan Malloy. Some of those taxes were scaled back, but not enough to convince GE to stay.

Immelt said the company needed to be in an environment “that’s willing to fight hard to be competitive and enduring.”

Gov. Dan Malloy spoke to FOX 61 about the impending move in December, saying, “It’s quite clear that GE is going to continue to have many, many jobs here, the question is how many jobs stay here in the headquarters operation versus relocating them somewhere else.”
