HARTFORD–A bill to legalize recreational marijuana use has been introduced into the General Assembly.

Rep. Juan Candelaria, a Democrat who represents New Haven, proposed the “act concerning regulation and taxation of the production, sale and use of marijuana.”

Under the proposed bill, anyone over the age of 21 would be allowed to use marijuana. The bill also proposes ways to regulate its use and growth, as well as sale methods and taxation.

Candelaria states the purpose of the bill is “to make the possession, sale, transport, growth and use of set amounts of marijuana legal for persons 21 years of age or older, subject to certain restrictions.”

A Quinnipiac Poll conducted in March 2015 showed that the majority of Connecticut voters support legalizing small amounts of marijuana for personal recreational use. In the poll, 63 percent of voters supported the measure. Also, 67 percent of voters said they support making possession illegal drugs a misdemeanor instead of a felony.

In the General Assembly session in January 2015, Candelaria proposed a bill with the same name, but the Hartford Courant reports the issue wasn’t brought up in committee.
