NEW LONDON  — It promises to be a gleaming steel and glass addition to the New London landscape right by the train station and waterfront.

Plans for a  new National Coast Guard Museum were launched over a year ago and, this summer, Dick Grahn, the president and CEO of the Coast Guard Museum Association remains confident about the future of the still to be built 54,000 sq. foot structure. “It’s going to be an opportunity to celebrate the Coast Guard but also a significant event for the city of New London.”

Grahn noted that the $100 million project is 25% toward its goal, $20 million has been pledged by the state. Grahn said the promise of more funds are soon to be announced. “We hope to make an announcement on August 14th on another significant contribution and that will really move this project along.”

According to Grahn, should the money goals be reached and final agreements with the Coast Guard be approved, groundbreaking on the museum would begin in 2018, with a completion date sometime in 2020.
