Chat GPT Gets schooled | FOX61 Student News

Does using Artificial Intelligence take away from the authenticity of school work?

MADISON, Connecticut — Story by Bryan Drews, Daniel Hand High School

The blinking cursor, the first sight every student sees before starting an assignment.

When students look upon it, most don't know where to start, but one new source could make or break how students produce work in the future.

This new source is called Chat GPT. “An artificial Intelligence Chat bot is far from what I understand of it. That is able to give sort of live conversational feedback to the user” said teacher Corey Rice.

ChatGPT, the GPT standing for “Generative Pre-Training Transformer”, was developed by Sam Altman and his company OPenAI. “Chat GPT is great at giving a semblance of understanding and can connect ideas and reference materials from online," said Rice.

High school students have begun using the program for their assignments. “I used it once for like my pre honors precalculus homework. It showed me step by step on how to solve the equation.” said high school senior Patrick McEwen

Does using AI take away from the authenticity of school work? “If it's giving you an entire story and you're just paraphrasing it to make it in your own life, yeah probably, because you're just following instructions," said McEwen.

Now that some students are using Chat GPT for their work, can teachers tell the difference? “For a college essay, this seems like a very well structured piece that lacks personality, where this one there's definitely a strong sense of personality. I think it's a tool that can be used for good,” said Daniel Hand High's head of the English Department, Mrs.DaSilva.

If you ask Chat GPT to write a conclusion about itself, it takes a more positive approach. But in reality, some school districts have begun banning the program, perhaps it's not meeting people’s expectations.
