NEW HAVEN, Conn. — New Haven police said a city resident was assaulted near his home Monday night and died from his injuries.

The incident initially was referenced as a shooting, but when crews assessed the man's injuries they determined he had been stabbed in the back.

The 30-year-old  Sterling Timmone was rushed to Yale-New Haven hospital where he remained in critical condition after surgery. New Haven police said he died Tuesday morning.

According to police, the assault happened just before 9 p.m. near the Timmone's home in the Amity section of the city. When emergency crews arrived at the scene, they found Timmone  in a Whalley Avenue business driveway. Police did not say what business he was found near.

Timmone was found unresponsive when crews arrived.

As detectives canvassed the neighborhood, officers held a crime scene on Whalley Avenue and Davis Street.  The streets have since been reopened.
