HARTFORD -- According to the ACHA-National College Health Assessment, one out of every 10 college students contemplates suicide.

This shocking statistic hits home for an East Haddam father.

"I lost my daughter to suicide about three and a half years ago — September of 2012," Matt Riley said.

Like many parents in this unimaginable position, he's channeling his grief into action. He works for the Jordan Porco Foundation, a nonprofit focused on suicide prevention through a unique peer-to-peer messaging approach. With headquarters in Hartford, the foundation, created in 2011, is experiencing significant growth.

One effort — Fresh Check Day — encourages students to learn and act on college campuses.
