Officer Struck in a Hit-and-Run; Woman Taken into Custody After Pursuit

The driver drove off, prompting a chase from officers and State Police

WATERBURY, Conn. — An officer struck by a fleeing car takes authorities on a pursuit. The 30-mile chase down I-84 ends with a woman taken into custody. The chase caught on camera.

Ring camera footage from a resident on St. Regis Street in East Hartford shows the dark-colored car as it flees the scene. The officer appears to be struck by the car then sprints to his cruiser and follows.

"Next thing you know I saw her go through the stop sign and the other stop sign down the road," said neighbor Edward Winek.

Winek said he saw two other officers pass St. Regis Street following the driver. He says he thought she was stopped before ever getting on the highway.

State Police Troopers aided East Hartford Police in the pursuit. Officers said the black Honda was going about 40 mph at times allowing for officers to surround the vehicle. Stop sticks were deployed stopping the car near exit 25 in Waterbury. The driver was taken into custody.

"I’m shocked," said Winek. "She comes on the road a lot. She visits somebody here."

Winek and other neighbors pointed to a home near the end of the street. They said the woman has some kind of relationship with the person who lives in the home.

"He’s a nice guy," said neighbor James McCabe. "I don’t know her too well. I’ll wave once in a while but I don’t know them very well."

Her car was known to most neighbors on the friendly, dead-end street.

"It’s a dark-colored car with no front bumper, no back bumper. You can see all the engine parts sticking out of it so that’s when I saw it on the news I knew that was the car. You can’t miss it," said Winek.

On this occasion, one unfamiliar neighbor called police to alert them of the suspicious car parked on their street. The officer struck by the car was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. East Hartford Police said the officer is expected to make a full recovery.

The driver of the vehicle has not been identified. Police said she will face multiple charges.
