Devin Eaton in court

NEW HAVEN – The lawyer for a Connecticut police officer arrested for wounding a 22-year-old woman while shooting at an unarmed couple’s car says he expects the officer to plead not guilty at his next court appearance.

Hamden officer Devin Eaton is scheduled to return to New Haven Superior Court on Tuesday.

Attorney Gregory Cerritelli says Eaton will likely enter not guilty pleas to assault and reckless endangerment charges.

Authorities say Eaton and a Yale University officer shot at the car in New Haven on April 16 after Eaton stopped it while investigating a reported attempted robbery.

Officials say Eaton fired 13 times after the driver, Paul Witherspoon III, got out of the car unexpectedly.

Witherspoon wasn’t injured. His girlfriend, Stephanie Washington, was seriously injured but survived.

The Yale officer was not charged.
