WILLIMANTIC — Police say a man was taken into custody after breaking into a church and barricading himself.

According to police, they received a call around 4:30 a.m., reporting a burglary at the Covenant Soup Kitchen on Valley Street. The kitchen is located in the basement of St. Paul’s Church.

Police say when they arrived at the scene, they saw the suspect running from the building. When the suspect saw them, he turned and ran back inside.

Police then spent the next two hours making several attempts to get the man out of the soup kitchen but were unsuccessful.

A K9 unit was brought in and found the suspect in a very small crawlspace in the back of the building. The suspect had no weapons on him.

Police identified Anthony Dodd, 40, and escaped parolee from New London as the suspect. He was charged with burglary, larceny, interfering with a police officer and breach of peace.

Police also say they believe Dodd found the keys to the building and used them to get in.

There were no injuries to any officers, and the suspect suffered only minor injuries.

He was released from the hospital and placed in Willimantic police custody.
