STORRS  — UConn is unofficially opening its basketball season with the annual "First Night" celebration at Gampel Pavilion.

The Huskies version of "Midnight Madness" is held in the evening and no longer marks the start of practice.

But it is a chance for fans to get a first look at the men's and women's basketball teams, who will be mixed together into two squads for a scrimmage.

There is also the requisite dunk contest, loud music, light show and games.

Friday's celebration also will serve as an introduction for new men's coach Dan Hurley. He replaces Kevin Ollie, who was fired after a 14-win season.

Women's coach Geno Auriemma is starting his 34th season, hoping to guide the Huskies to a 12th consecutive Final Four and a 12th national championship.
