CT Bucketlist: Ski Sundown

Depending on conditions, there are anywhere between 14 and 16 trails to tackle.

When it comes to skiing... you don’t have to look too far! Connecticut is home to several mountains,

Ski sundown’s been covered in snow since the 1970s.

“We just feel really fortunate to be able to be open,” said Bob Switzgable, President of Ski Sundown.  “To be able to offer what we do offer which is skiing for people.

Here social distancing comes naturally.

“Being on the slopes naturally distances you,” said Switzgable. “You have a face covering on when you are skiing typically, and we do require a face covering anywhere on the property.”

Lift tickets run from $18 for a child, and $62 for an adult. Plus, don’t worry if the idea of strapping in stresses you out, help is available.

“They have a first time skier package, which is a great deal,” said Tracey Dickey from Ski Sundown Rentals. “That includes your pass, a lesson, and all your equipment.

Depending on conditions, there are anywhere between 14 and 16 trails to tackle.

“It is fantastic,” said Zachary Hearn and Instructor at Ski Sundown. “It has the best varied terrain Connecticut, if you are an advanced skier you have got Gunbarrel, and if not, you’ve got Tom’s Treat, the easiest way down the mountain.

“I love the conditions,” said Jonathan Olson a Volunteer Ski Patrol. “This place has great snowmaking, great grooming, the trails are nice and steep.”

And no matter whether you’re a pro or just getting started, the team here is hopeful families will have a good time together.

“At the end of the day, they had a shared experience,” said Switzgable.

Ski Sundown welcomes visitors seven days a week, and they’ll stay open as long as there is snow.
