Trees and power lines downed, but no reports of property damage or injuries.

CANAAN, Conn. — The National Weather Service in Albany determined that an EF-0 tornado touched down in Norfolk on August 3. Previously, the NWS had said the same system had produced two tornadoes in Sharon and Falls Village.

The NWS said they received photo and eyewitness accounts Tuesday consistent with a tornado. “The NWS did conduct a survey of this area on August 3, 2020, but could not locate any damage. Now with this information, the NWS confirms an EF0 tornado, approximately 0.5 mile in length and estimated 100 yards in width.” They said the tornado was in the area of North Street.

Previously, The NWS said the first tornado was classified as an EF0 in Sharon at 5:36 pm. The storm's track was about a quarter of a mile and was about 30 yards wide. It had wind speeds of 80 mph.

The second storm was in Falls Village and hit at 6:05pm. It was classified as a EF1 and tracked about 1.7 miles with a width of 100 yards. The maximum wind speed was 90 mph.

A strong line of thunderstorms moved northeast from New York, into Connecticut, and up into Massachusetts, spawning the twister. The storm caused damage in nearby towns including Salisbury, Sharon, Canaan and Norfolk.

Connecticut State Police at Troop B in Canaan say  downed trees and power lines have closed Route 112 in Salisbury between Route 41 and Route 7, and the road was closed for several hours.

The Norfolk Fire Department says Route 272 north of the town center was also closed due to downed trees.

The same storm is reported to have resulted in a tornado touchdown in Sandisfield, Massachusetts in the Berkshires.

FOX61 Chief Meteorologist Rachel Frank says If you spot severe weather or any sort, immediately seek shelter. If you a Tornado Warning is issued, you should seek shelter in a basement or interior room of your home.
