Severe storm brings trees damage, power outages, hail to Connecticut

It moved through quickly, but it was strong enough to cause damage and power outages across the state.

HARTFORD, Conn. — A heavy band of showers and storms passed through Connecticut Saturday afternoon. The entire state was under a severe thunderstorm watch for most of Saturday afternoon and into the evening.

It moved through quickly, but it was strong enough to cause damage and power outages across the state.

Cheshire neighbors came out after the storm passed through their area to find downed trees, cracked branches, and debris strewn across Warren Street.

“It was intense and nobody knew anything, like it came and it was gone, in the blink of an eye, gone,” one neighbor told FOX61. “There’s probably a good 300 pounds on that trailer to go from there to there. I don’t know how fast that wind was but it had to have been pretty severe and again, the tree that got knocked down, it’s pretty healthy.”

Over in Guilford, emergency responders closed off some roads and warned drivers to be careful of downed trees and fallen branches blocking parts of the street.

FOX61 Chief Meteorologist Rachel Frank said that it is likely that a tornado touched down in Branford, possibly also affecting Guilford. However, the National Weather Service has not confirmed any tornado touchdowns in Connecticut at this time. They plan to survey the areas Sunday.

In Stamford, heavy rain and strong winds were seen and were bringing down some of the leaves still on the trees.

In Windsor Locks, Shane sent the video below to FOX61, saying he saw hail pouring down near Bradley International Airport.

Power outages made it tough for drivers to see at night. Some stoplights were also out. Police in both Branford and Guilford told FOX61 they took numerous calls for damage in their communities while the storm was passing through.
