Confirmed tornado touched down in Thompson, as remnants of Tropical Storm Fred hit Connecticut

The storm dumped heavy rain across the state causing multiple issues for drivers

HARTFORD, Conn. — A tornado touched down in the northeast town of Thompson on Thursday morning, as the remnants of Tropical Storm Fred passed through the region.

The National Weather Service in Boston confirmed the tornado after FOX61's Rachel Frank reported that the radar detected debris.

According to NWS, confirming photos were also obtained.

When asked if and when they plan to survey the damage, officials said those decisions are still being determined.

Heavy rain also brought headaches for residents and commuters, causing localized flash flooding in areas like West Hartford and Bloomfield.

The storm also brought a Severe Thunderstorm Warning to northeastern Connecticut with potential wind damage. Route 12 is currently closed between Route 131 and Wilsonville Road due to trees and wires down in the roadway.

The FOX61 Weather Team says radar confirmed debris was lofted into the air from what was likely a brief, weak tornado.

As of noon, Eversource is reporting 1,206 outages, the majority being in Thompson with 459 outages.

Several crashes on highways this morning also caused delays, including the Southbury/Newtown area of I-84. A tractor-trailer jack-knifed by exit 11 on the eastbound side, causing a fuel spill and delays on both sides of the highway.

Flash flooding caused delays on I-84 westbound in Hartford between exits 48 and 50.

As Fred moves out Thursday, all eyes are on Tropical Storm Henri which now has a portion of New England in its forecast cone.

The storm is expected to turn north over the coming days traveling just off the east coast. At this time it's not known if Henri will creep closer to New England for a bigger impact or drift back out to sea.

Right now the National Hurricane Center has odds of tropical-storm-force winds at a 1 in 5 chance for Hartford and Bridgeport and a 1 in 4 chance for New London. The odds are greater for Provincetown and Nantucket, about 50/50 or greater.
