Utility Companies and planters brace for possible severe weather

United Illuminating is taking steps to assemble crews and supplies for storm preparations. Friday marks two years since four tornadoes touched down in the state.

People across the state of Connecticut enjoyed the beautiful spring day while they could. The threat of severe storms looms upon the horizon.

"So far so good," said Nadine Deluca in reference to her garden. It’s been an interesting spring for people tending to them. Luckily, Deluca's survived the frost from earlier this week.

"I covered them. I took the ones that were on the patio in and I gave them some extra miracle grow," said Deluca.

Her garden now faces a new threat from severe weather. Strong winds or hail could try to do a number on her garden.

"If you haven’t put too much out, you can cover it with buckets or covers of some kind but if you got a lot out there just keep your fingers crossed," said Jeff Schmidt of True Value in Waterbury.

Plants aren’t the only thing that stand a threat from the storm. Fallen branches or trees could do a number on power lines.

"We prepare for storms all the time and we are ready to respond when they hit," said Ed Crowder.

"The scope of the damage was catastrophic in the areas where it hit but luckily those areas were fairly limited," said Crowder.

United Illuminating said it took nearly a week for all of their customers to regain power. If you find yourself in a worst-case scenario it's good to have an emergency kit stocked with food, water, batteries, led lights, portable chargers, and first aid materials.

COVID-19 adds additional uncertainty but UI is prepared. Their staff are practicing proper health and safety guidelines including socially distancing in the field. They want to remind the public to do the same.

"Sometimes I think people by nature just want to say hi and come up and forget about the rules. So we want to make sure everybody is safe and protected," said Crowder.

Eversource said they are also watching the forecast closely. They will be ready to respond to any damage.
