Family-friendly things to do in Connecticut this Memorial Day Weekend

There are parades across the state as well as other festivals and events to check out!

CONNECTICUT, USA — It's Memorial Day Weekend, aka a long weekend for many around the state, with Monday being Memorial Day. It's a weekend of honoring those who lost their lives in service to their country and the unofficial start to summer for many. 

Here's what's happening around the state this weekend that you, friends, and family can check out and enjoy!

It's that time of year for the Trans Am Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville! You can celebrate the unofficial start of summer at this beloved annual car racing event. There is a packed schedule of races and activities each day and on Sunday, there will be a car show and a craft beer competition that will feature dozens of local breweries that attendees can try and vote for their favorite. Attention foodies! The Milford Food Truck Festival is taking place all weekend long! It is the longest-running food truck festival in the state. And... admission is free! The festival will feature a variety of food trucks from all around the state that will serve up delicious dishes from tacos to pizza to burgers and more! The festival will also have activities for kids, local vendors, and live music! Learn more about the event here.

Mohegan Sun is cashing in on the sunny weekend and celebrating its new, fully renovated sun patio! The casino will hold a Summer Kick-Off bash on Saturday, which will include all kinds of fun and entertainment. The event is free and will feature incredible vendors, drink specials, food trucks, and live music on the patio's new stage. It's a great way to kick off the unofficial start to summer! CT VegFest will take place this Saturday at Bushnell Park in Hartford! This festival celebrating vegan food and causes aims to inspire and create a culture of support for plant-based living throughout the state. There will be live music performances, a diverse array of vegan food vendors, and educational workshops! Admission is free, and the event will run from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Learn more here.

Take a step back in time at Robin Hood's Medieval Fair - Barbarian & Swashbuckler Weekend! This is a spectacular event where Vikings, barbarians, and swashbucklers from all over can unite in a celebration of feasting, fun, and frivolity in a true, medieval style. Witness thrilling jousts as knights showcase their kills in medical combat, join in on a traditional maypole dance, and interact with Robin Hood and his merry band roaming throughout the grounds. Robin Hood's Medieval Fair runs every Saturday and Sunday from May 18 to June 30 from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Harwinton Fairgrounds. Learn more here! 

Celebrate and honor Memorial Day at Lyman Orchards for their Heroes of Steel Car Show. The show will happen Monday, May 27, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a salute to the flag ceremony at 2 p.m. It's free for spectators to attend! Proceeds from the show will benefit United Steelworkers, Veterans of Steel, District 4. There will also be yard games, video games, and face painting. You also have the chance to win a 50/50 raffle during the car show. Learn more about the event here.

Finally, get ready to set sail this summer on the Norwalk Seaport Association's 45-foot C.J. Toth catamaran for a relaxing two-hour cruise through Norwalk Harbor and Long Island Sound! This is an unforgettable adventure tour of the outer reaches of Norwalk Harbor that provides unique views of the city and surrounding waterways. The cruises begin May 22 and will run until September 1, Wednesday through Sunday, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Learn more about the cruises and reserve your spot here.
