Just in time for the start of Hannukah, the Crown Market in West Hartford shows us how to make flawless potato latkes!

CONNECTICUT, USA — The first night of Hannukah is Thursday, and West Hartford's Crown Market is showing us how to make some delicious potato latkes to celebrate! 

The Crown Market boasts gourmet take-out, catering services as well as freshly baked goods. They are also proud to offer many Kosher items produced in the local area.

Located at 2471 Albany Avenue in West Hartford, Connecticut’s Bishop’s Corner neighborhood, the Crown Market is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Friday until sundown throughout the year. We are closed every Saturday for Shabbat observance.

Potato Latkes

Makes 12

Ingredients:

3 medium russet potatoes, peeled

1 large egg, beaten or more to taste

2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon of grated onion

½ teaspoon of salt, or more to taste

¼ teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper

¼ cup peanut oil for frying or as needed

Instructions

1) Peel potatoes and grate them on the large side of a grater. Place shredded potatoes in a cheesecloth and wring, extracting as much moisture as possible.

2) Place the shredded, drained potatoes into a medium bowl. Add the egg, flour, onion, pepper, and salt, and stir until well combined.

3) Heat 1/4 inch of oil in a large, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-high heat. Place large spoonfuls of the potato mixture into the hot oil, pressing down on them to form 1/4- to 1/2-inch thick patties. 

4) Cook until golden brown, 4 to 5 minutes. Flip and repeat on the other side.

5) Remove to a paper towel-lined plate to drain while you cook any remaining latkes. Serve hot. Serve with applesauce and sour cream and enjoy!
