Big Y to open 2 new supermarkets in Connecticut

It also announced it has acquired a gas station and convenience store in North Haven.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Big Y is set to continue its Connecticut expansion with two new grocery stores in Fairfield County.

The Massachusetts-based supermarket chain announced Tuesday it has reached an agreement to acquire the leasehold interests for new stores in Westport and Brookfield. It was also announced that a third store will open in Westborough, Massachusetts as well.

“All of us at Big Y are excited about the opportunity to enter into these communities with our unique fresh and local foods along with our exceptional and knowledgeable employees,” Michael D’Amour, president and CEO of Big Y, said in a statement. “These locations fit nicely within our current store footprint.”

The store in Westport will be located at 1076 Post East Road while the one in Brookfield will be located at 14 Candlewood Lake Road. The store in Westborough will be located at 290 Turnpike Road.

The company said the process to convert and remodel these three spaces could start as early as within the next four to six months.

In its announcement Tuesday, the company also revealed that it was acquiring a gas and convenience store at 342 Washington Ave. in North Haven, across the street from the Big Y supermarket there.

Big Y is one of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England. In addition to the three locations announced Tuesday, a new supermarket is under construction in Middletown and another is planned in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. In all, these locations will bring Big Y’s total number of supermarkets to 77 stores across Massachusetts and Connecticut.
